THE Macbeth PROJECT
BASED ON THE PLAY By William Shakespeare
Presented by The Venture Youth Theatre
Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a heightened political thriller. The play explores the themes of ambition, fate, and self-deception; a searing examination of the nature of power, Macbeth is considered one of the great tragedies of the canon.
Scottish Generals, Macbeth and Banquo, are returning home from a war with Norway when they are confronted by three witches. The witches prophesy that Macbeth will one day be king of Scotland. Motivated by power and spurred on by his ambitious wife, Macbeth murders the current king, Duncan, and seizes the crown. More political murders ensue until the government splinters, civil war breaks out, and the dead rise from their grave. Tortured by her own guilt and violent paranoia, Lady Macbeth is driven to suicide, while a now-deserted and deluded Macbeth must face the wrath of Macduff, the army of rebel Scots, and the ‘scorpions’ of his own mind.
